A new home for opera

Detroit’s Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts will soon host live opera — something it hasn't done in 30 years. The Classic Opera Series will premiere Feb. 28, 2026, with a one-night-only concert production of "Turandot," a 1926 tale of love, passion, power, determination and triumph of the human spirit in the face of challenges, writes arts and culture reporter Duante Beddingfield. It will feature a newly commissioned, 40-piece reduction of the original arrangements by David Karp, making it a world premiere orchestration. Not an opera fan? Music Hall president and artistic director Vince Paul says: "You don’t have to love opera. You will when you walk out.”
