The needs of a jazz band are specific and not necessarily covered in standard music curricula. Rhythm section work – including bass, drums, guitar and piano -- is 50% written, and 50% intuitive, requiring listening with a trained ear. Our instructor provides the crucial links to the jazz concepts that students need to be successful for interpreting and performing with a jazz band. Crucially, we bring the individual attention needed by pianists, bassists, and drummers to strengthen their reading skills, musicianship, and ensemble playing.

All instruction is carried out under the direction of the DPSCD faculty band director, in pursuit of the short and long-term needs of his ensemble.
