Music Hall Core Values Since 1928
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
When Matilda Dodge Wilson built the Wilson Theater, she specified that people of all backgrounds would be welcomed, whether as audiences or performers. Her early example, decades ahead of her time, has always guided us.
Our Commitment
We are committed to fostering, cultivating and preserving a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion, knowing that our human capital is our most valuable asset. We embrace and encourage our employees’ differences in age, color, disability, ethnicity, family or marital status, gender identity or expression, language, national origin, physical and mental ability, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, veteran status, and other characteristics that make our employees unique.
Our education and engagement portfolios are the core of our efforts to create equitable access for individuals of color and/or of limited financial means. Of the nearly 5,000 school children we instruct in Detroit classrooms each year, the majority face the challenges of poverty and its associated ills.
Our Emerging Artists program serves young Detroiters working to develop their skills and talents by making available our Main Stage and Aretha’s Jazz Café stage at cost or free when possible. Our staff lends expertise in lighting and sound design, staging, and marketing – amounting to a working apprenticeship opportunity for the city’s fledgling performing artists. Our outdoor summer festival, Detroit Music Weekend, has adhered to a free admissions policy since inception.
Finally, it is important to note that Music Hall is an historically urban house, and takes seriously its position as a provider of arts and culture to the city’s majority Black population. This commitment can be seen in our content mix of plays & musicals, as well as our education work. Detroit’s urban audiences know that Music Hall is their home for these presentations, and that we work with presenters to ensure affordability and access to them.
Our Board of Trustees, staff, audiences, and students are quite possibly the most diverse and inclusive of any cultural institution anywhere. We have proudly embodied these values since the day we opened our doors.
