As would be expected in a music-loving city, there is a very high level of enthusiasm and excitement among the students! Our artist-educators meet them where they are, with tailored instruction that accelerates elementary musicianship and use of songs that the students already know and love. Prioritizing accelerated enjoyment of elementary musicianship, students learn basic notation and technique, playing by ear, rhythm, melody, group play and solo improvisation.

Students can also elect jazz-gospel vocal and choral instruction, focusing on contemporary repertoire as a point of entry and exploring genre crossover via jazz’ stylistic flexibility. Teamwork is emphasized and improvisation is incorporated, with basic vocal group choreography. Classes include an introductory music theory class that brings varied levels together, establishing a shared base of knowledge.
